The RV Verlag, well known for its travel guides, and hiking maps, has produced a remarkable book: a cultural atlas of Germany. It entails a complete presentation of all culturally and art historically important sights in Germany: fortresses and churches, castles , industrial and natural monuments and much more. The book does not center around the cities, which are more or less elaborately dealt with towards the end of this volume, but around the sights in the "flat country". By way of this, innumerable cultural treasures with a fascinating ancient history are introduced to the reader. The publishers divided the expanse of Germany into a patchwork carpet and produced the corresponding texts for each map on the scale of 1:200 000. The whole book gives a thought-out, clearly organized impression. Fortresses or castles are clearly marked on the maps. The cultural guide, however, is particularly interesting because of its compact form of presentation. The texts are brief and concise and highly in-formative. Some complementary informations about entertainment venues and other places of interest round up the picture. Thus, a portrait of German cultural history has been compiled that in ist genre is without comparison. An ample index of people and places rounds up the picture. A colurful book, not only in its artistic design and getup.

Westfälische Nachrichten, Sept. 23. 1995
