Bettine von Arnim
Loving alone is my art
Edited and with an epilogue by Andreas Maeckler
148 pp
Ullstein Verlag, Berlin. 1. edition 1989 (1-8ooo prints)

"Nobody is familiar with idealistic love, everybody believes in the ordinary, and thus a happiness originating in the higher form or led through it to a higher destiny, is not granted to us. Whatever I want to achieve, should come through this idealistic love; It breaks all locks to new worlds of art, prophecy, and poetry."

Bettine von Arnim ( 1785-1859) gave us a unique example of witty literature in letters. "Goethe's correspondence with a child", her letters to Achim von Arnim, max Prokop von Freberg-Eisenberg, Fürst Hemann von Pückler-muskau, and Philipp Nathusius, and many worldly-wise aphorisms demonstrate her profound capacity of love, through which she was able to emancipate herself from the traditional constricting roles of her time. Her concept of "love as a play of life" is eternally valid.
